Under the provisions of the Mississippi Plant Act, the Bureau carries out plant pest programs designed to prevent the spread of destructive insects, diseases and other pests when plant material, machinery and carriers are transported. These programs include inspection, certification, quarantine and survey activities.

Mississippi Plant Act
Mississippi Code Annotated Sections 69-25-1 through 69-25-47 The Bureau of Plant Industry is established under the Mississippi Plant Act to protect the agricultural and horticultural interests of the state from the introduction and spread of injurious insects and plant diseases within the state.
Mississippi Boll Weevil Management Act
Mississippi Code Annotated Sections 69-37-1 through 69-37-41 Determines methods and procedures to be used for boll weevil suppression, pre-eradication and eradication. Certifies a statewide Cotton Growers Organization. Authorizes the state agriculture department to promulgate regulations to carry out the Boll Weevil Management Act.
